QA Engineer

There's nothing more interesting to software quality engineers worth their mettle than working in environments where there's no such thing as a cookie cutter solution. That's exactly the scenario you'll find as a QA Engineer for Panther Express, testing customer configurations of our revolutionary content delivery network product suite. You'll thrive in this role with the kind of forensic mindset that drives you to ferret out the unusual edge cases, the extreme circumstances, and deal with them before they get into production.

Working from our offices in New York City's Flatiron district, your first mission will be to learn about our cache server and our infrastructure. Working in a small, agile QA team means you'll be able you to put your personal stamp on how quality engineering will be done around here. We can't use off the shelf test tools, because you'll be testing custom software running in a distributed systems environment where each customer scenario is different. So a key part of your white box QA role will be to build an automated test suite. Java is our preferred language to implement the test harness, but you'll find us highly receptive to new ideas. If you think PHP or Python is a better choice, for example, we're open to discussion. Since there are code writing responsibilities here, candidates with computer science degrees are ideal, as are former software developers who've found their true calling in QA. Besides Java, you'll also write some Bash scripts to load drivers and execute simple tasks.

Since customers origin configurations vary greatly being able to setup and configure web servers will be key. We'll look to you for an understanding of the basics of HTTP and DNS, so you can understand what our system is doing. To get a little granular, the client in our testing environment is the Web Browser, and your charter will be to write a wrapper on something that could make HTTP calls so you can make a specific request and see if you get back the answer expected. In managing defects you may discover that when you use authentication under a certain situation it passes, although by rights it should fail, and you'll need to run that case against every build. You'll thus be creating a portfolio of everything ever broken and fixed, and will verify in the harness that it was not broken again.

Candidates to whom we'll give bonus points have:

  • Network engineering experience - router configuration, IP tables, BGP
  • Linux kernel skills a plus
  • Solid SQL experience (mySQL preferred)
  • Solid Linux administrative experience
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, such as handshaking and how create and tear down a socket

We'll judge your effectiveness based on how many problems you find, how well rounded your test suite gets, your work on edge cases and how effectively you interact with our team. From a career perspective, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that if you can test our CDN against a unique array of origin server configurations, you can test anything.
